Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where do you coach?

A: My entire program operates at the James Street tennis centre, Toowoomba Tennis Association, corner of James and Water Street South (next to the railway line).

Q: When do you coach?

A: During school terms I run four sessions after school, Monday to Thursday, between 3:45 and 6:45pm. These include performance squad training sessions. During term I also run Hot Shots Challenges. During school holidays I run Holiday Junior Clinics and lessons by arrangement.

Q: How long do your lessons run for?

A: The standard time is 45 minutes. The Green performance squad session runs 90 minutes.

Q: What qualifications and experience do you have?

A: I am a Tennis Australia Club Professional Coach (Certificate IV in Sports Coaching), a trainee Master Club Professional Coach, an ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Approved Deliverer, a Fitbit Cardio Tennis Approved Deliverer, I have full insurance, a current First Aid qualification, and I hold a Blue Card for working with children. I regularly attend professional development workshops. My business has been running for 15 years, since 2006 in Toowoomba.

Q: What about competition?

A: Competition is a big part of my program. My philosophy and that of ANZ Tennis Hot Shots is to have children playing the game. I run Hot Shots Challenges for Red, Orange and Green stage players. These are competitions tailored for players of this level - stepping stones to participation in weekly club competition. I also organise players at Green stage and above to participate in the Toowoomba & District Junior Tennis League. I also facilitate suitable players entering Junior Development Series and Junior Tour tournaments.

 Q: What about make-up lessons?

A: I hold make-up lessons only for lessons I cancel for any reason during term. One make-up lesson is held, where possible, during the next school holidays. Players who miss a lesson during term are very welcome to attend an extra same-level group lesson at another time (subject to the group having a vacancy) to make up for the lesson they missed.

More Info

* It is usually possible to find a timeslot for new students.

* Where demand for places exceeds supply, I do keep a waiting list.

* Lessons are based on age, standard and gender.

* I offer free trial lessons. If the student is then registered, the fee for this lesson is included in the invoice. If the student does not continue, there is no charge.

* New students do not need to have any experience in tennis. Children can borrow a suitable size Tecnifibre brand racquet when they begin.

* Students are encouraged to register in the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program, which is Tennis Australia's official kids starter program. Parents can do this online and at the same time order the free official Hot Shots t-shirt for their child.

* When they begin, students are placed in a lesson of a stage level - Red, Orange or Green (even if they do not officially register). The goal is to progress through this pathway, ultimately to full court tennis played with the standard yellow ball. However, it is not "a race to yellow"!

* Students can receive progress competency reports at the end of a term. Please enquire about this.

* I run an Encouragement Award, which is designed to reward effort. It operates within each lesson. A certificate is given to lesson winners at the end of each term, and I select one or more winners each term. From the year's term winners, I select a player to win the annual award and have their name engraved on my perpetual shield. This has been presented every year since 2006.

* Lessons are for 1 (private), 2 (semi-private) or 3-5 (group) students.

My program includes performance squad training sessions for selected students. I can run Red, Orange and Green Performance Squads.

* I do not coach or charge for coaching on Public Holidays in Toowoomba.

* I welcome feedback from parents and students about their experiences in my program.

* Siblings are very welcome. A 5 per cent discount is given for additional children from the same family.

* Please contact me for all fees. Payment for on-going lessons are charged on a term basis. Invoices are issued. On-time payment is expected.
